I use a combination of GeoJSON, PHP and MySQL on the backend and Openlayers, JQuery and AJAX on the frontend to visualize geodata from MySQL.
No need for any Server like UMN Mapserver, Geoserver, ArcGIS Server, Oracle or other expansive technology for this simple thing.
